B.M.R. Basal Metabolic Rate is a calculation based on the amount of energy expended in a 24 hour time period with little or no activity. The number is an estimated representation of what your body needs to function properly throughout the day. It does not take into consideration of body composition, which could mean that the numbers you currently are given may be lower or higher than suggested. It is best to get to get an idea of what you currently need and then begin to assess your physical activity needs to come up with a more accurate number. The typical error margin is around 5% when calculated. Overall, it is a starting point and with any program, there is going to be an adjustment period. Once you get a firm grasp on your nutrition, you will be able to identify whether you need to go up or down in calories.
